19世紀イギリス。小説家を夢見るメアリーは“異端の天才”と噂される、妻子ある詩人パーシー・シェリーと出会う。互いの才能に強く惹かれあった二人は、情熱に身を任せ、駆け落ちする。愛と放蕩の日々は束の間、メアリーに襲い掛かる数々の悲劇。失意のメアリーはある日、パーシーと共に滞在していた、悪名高い詩人・バイロン卿の別荘で「皆で一つずつ怪奇談を書いて披露しよう」と持ちかけられる。深い哀しみと喪失に打ちひしがれる彼女の中で、何かが生まれようとしていた──。

原作者C・ブラウンの実話を映画化した作品。生まれながらの重度の脳性小児麻痺により、左足が少し動かせるだけで、後は植物人間同様の生活を余儀なくされている不遇の主人公が、その絶え間ざる努力の末、やがて言語能力を取り戻し、わずかに動く左足を使い絵を描けるようになるまで成長していく姿を描く。
