シカゴ郊外にあるキャンベル研究所。若き心理学者キャサリンは人間の潜在意識や夢の中に入り込む技術を研究していた。そんな彼女のもとに、ガラス張りのセル（独房）に女性を閉じ込め溺死する姿を見て性的快楽を得る殺人鬼の心の中を覗いて欲しいという依頼が舞い込む。
