A hard-nosed Chicago journalist has an unlikely love affair with an eagle researcher.

Blissfully untouched by self-awareness, and only fitfully in tune with reality, Gary sallies forth to make money, armed with faith in himself and little to no knowledge of Chinese culture. The couple sleep together and agree to meet at the railway station the next morning. But when the student comes home his uncle has died.
