P・ニューマン主演による「ハスラー」の続編。かつてのハスラー、エディは、あのミネソタ・ファッツとの死闘から25年が経ち、今はもう50代。現在は現役を離れ、シカゴを根城に気ままな生活を送っていた。そんな彼の目に、顔に似合わぬ鋭いキューさばきで容赦なく相手を打ち負かしているビンセントという若いハスラーの姿が止まった。彼の姿に若い頃の自分を重ねるエディ。彼はこの若者を、自分の手で最高のハスラーに育て上げようと決心する。

元々は軍事用ロボットだが、落雷によるショート・サーキット（回路不良）で感情を持ってしまったナンバー・ファイブ。以前は工場から逃げ出す騒動を起こしたが、今や人間たちにもなじんでジョニー5というニックネームで呼ばれる。NYでジョニー5のおもちゃを作って売っているベンはデパートで働くサンディの依頼を受け、おもちゃをひと月で1000体作ることに。そこに本物のジョニー5が現われ、おもちゃ作りを手伝うことに。
