第二次世界大戦下のイギリス。ペベンシー家の4人の兄妹-ピーター、スーザン、エドマンド、ルーシーは、ロンドンの空襲を逃れて田舎に住むカーク教授に預けられる。古めかしく広大な教授の屋敷は、子供たちにとって最高の探検場所。好奇心旺盛な末っ子のルーシーは、“かくれんぼ”をしているうちに、空き部屋で大きな古い衣装だんすをみつける。見えない力に導かれるかのように衣装だんすに入り、毛皮のコートを押しのけて奥に進むといつしかルーシーは雪に覆われた真夜中の森に立っていた。

常人離れした知能指数を持つが日常生活には順応できない男、マックス・コーエンは自作のスーパーコンピュータを用いて日々株式市場の予測を行っていた。「世界に存在する事象のすべてはそれぞれ一つの数式で理解できる」と信じる彼の前に、ある日コンピュータが巨大な数字の塊を吐き出した。216桁のその数字には、かつて円周率 (π) を研究していたマックスの師ソルも辿り着いていた。彼はその日を境に216桁の数字が持つ不可思議な魔力に取り付かれていく。

冬の間は豪雪で閉鎖されるホテルの管理人職を得た小説家志望のジャック・トランスは、妻のウェンディーと心霊能力のある息子ダニーとともにホテルへやってくる。そのホテルでは、かつて精神に異常をきたした管理人が家族を惨殺するという事件が起きており、当初は何も気にしていなかったジャックも、次第に邪悪な意思に飲みこまれていく。

Writes Jordan, "I must emphasize that I do not know the exact significance of any of the symbols in the film any more than I know the meaning of my dreams... I hope that the symbols and the episodes set off poetic associations in the viewer. I mean them to be entirely open to the viewer's own interpretation."
