初めて映画館を訪れて以来、映画に夢中になった少年サミー・フェイブルマンは、母親から8ミリカメラをプレゼントされる。家族や仲間たちと過ごす日々のなか、人生の一瞬一瞬を探求し、夢を追い求めていくサミー。母親はそんな彼の夢を支えてくれるが、父親はその夢を単なる趣味としか見なさない。サミーはそんな両親の間で葛藤しながら、さまざまな人々との出会いを通じて成長していく。
