山戸結希監督が企画・プロデュースを務め、自身を含め80 年代後半〜90 年代生まれの新進映画監督、総勢15 名が集結。“自分自身のセクシャリティあるいはジェンダーがゆらいだ瞬間が映っていること”を共通のテーマとして、各監督が8 分以内の短編で表現するオムニバス作品。

東京湾で20歳の女性看護学校生のばらばら他殺体が見つかるが、彼女は夜な夜な渋谷で遊んでいた“チワワちゃん”こと良子だった。渋谷の遊び仲間たち、ミキ、ヨシダらは、自分たちが本名も知らなかった良子と出会ってからの当時を振り返る。そのころ、ヨシダの新しい恋人だった良子は仲間たちと刹那的な毎日を過ごしたが、インスタグラムをきっかけに彼女は人気モデル“チワワ”となり、有名カメラマンのサカタに気に入られる。

幼くして豊臣秀吉に才を認められた石田三成。やがて大名に取り立てられた三成は、自分の石高の半分を持って、猛将として名を馳せた牢人の左近を家来に請う。秀吉に忠誠を誓いながらも利害によって天下を治めることに疑問を抱き、正義で世の中を変えようとする三成の姿に興味を持った左近は二つ返事で配下に入る。一方、秀吉の体調がおもわしくない中、天下取りの野望を描く家康は秀吉恩顧の武将たちに言葉巧みに取り入っていく。

かつての栄光と名声も遠い過去のものとなり、いまやすっかり落ちぶれて孤独を心の内に抱えながら、鬱屈とした日々を過ごすベテラン映画監督の古谷。久々の新作となる低予算映画の現場で、主演女優の安里がわがままをとなえて、撮影がストップ。結局、安里は主役の座を下り、映画自体も製作中止に追い込まれる事態に。そんな折、彼が講師を務める映画学校の教え子・結花と街で偶然出会った古谷は、彼女の部屋に転がり込む。

1945年7月。太平洋戦争での戦況が悪化する日本に対して、連合軍はポツダム宣言の受託を迫る。連日にわたって、降伏するか本土決戦に突き進むかを議論する閣議が開かれるが結論を一本化できずにいた。やがて広島、長崎に原爆が投下され、日本を取り巻く状況はさらに悪くなっていく。全国民一斉玉砕という案も取り沙汰される中、阿南惟幾陸軍大臣は決断に悩み、天皇陛下は国民を案じていた。そのころ、畑中健二少佐ら若手将校たちは終戦に反対するクーデターを画策していた。

Kyoto in April. A timid and shy student, Watabe, is struggling to make friends and spending lonely days in a university. Concurrently, student life for Satomi Kumahori has also been hard, due to her overweight appearance. For Satomi, it is only Watabe who talks to her kindly and does not make fun of her. One day she takes advantage of Watabe and starts to live off him, literally like a parasite. While Satomi is using him as a slave, he falls in love with Nako, a girl he meets at work. At the same time, he accidentally learns about Satomi's past.

進学校に通ったが受験に失敗してしまい、寮があるからという理由だけで逃げるように大蝦夷農業高校（通称・エゾノー）に入学した勇吾。将来の目標や夢を抱く同級生のアキや駒場に劣等感を感じながら、酪農科学科の数々の実習、体育の授業での20キロマラソン、アキに誘われて入部した馬術部での朝4時起きなど悪戦苦闘の日々を送る。彼は実習で出会った子豚に“豚丼”と名付けかわいがるが、“豚丼”が出荷される日がやって来る。

Yuriko's happy life as a piano teacher is suddenly changed when her cheat is unveiled. She starts working at Bento store but soon after co-workers at Bento store know about her secret.

Manzo is a fisherman in a small seaside community who lives and works alone, but longs for a relationship and maybe a wife. When a sign is posted advertising a matchmaking party with city women, all the men gussy themselves up and videotape themselves for the dating service. Manzo borrows a camcorder and tries his luck, but his rehearsed speech doesn't go as planned. When showing the videotape to the prospective dates, he discovers something unusual: There is a woman and her son living in one of his closets. Instead of kicking them out, he encourages them to stay and develops a relationship with them that makes the other fishermen jealous.

City of Life and Death takes place in 1937, during the height of the Second Sino-Japanese War. The Imperial Japanese Army has just captured the then-capital of the Republic of China, Nanjing. What followed was known as the Nanking Massacre, or the Rape of Nanking, a period of several weeks wherein tens of thousands of Chinese soldiers and civilians were killed.

Sakura is a 20-year-old college student who has sex for money to fund her shopping addiction. After her customers leave her apartment, she spends her time spying on Leo, a young, beautiful, and (dyed) blond-haired boy, who works at a male escort service across the street. One day, Leo pays her a visit, and so starts an unlikely friendship. But Leo has a troubled past. He is the son of a prostitute who worked for his current pimp and died before she could repay money that she owed. He himself entered the business when he graduated from junior high school. Though Leo refuses to make love to Sakura (he has a policy of not having sex outside of work), the two fall in love and become inseparable until Leo gets into a fight with Sakura's boyfriend and gets him into a car accident. Leo turns himself in, and Sakura moves to Okinawa to wait for him at their dream destination.

Adapted from Haruki Murakami's short stories, The Elephant Vanishes reveals a strange and beautiful world lurking beneath the surface of Tokyo's bright bustle. The Elephant Vanishes was performed in Japanese by an all-Japanese cast.
