1993年、小さな出版社に勤める妻・翔子と生活力に乏しい夫・カナオは第一子の誕生を控え幸せな日々を送っていた。カナオは日本画家を目指す傍ら法廷画家の職を得る。その後第一子の死去という悲劇に見舞われた夫婦のうち、翔子は次第にうつに陥っていく。そんな翔子を静かに見守るカナオは、法廷画家という職について法廷に通ううちに東京・埼玉連続幼女誘拐殺人事件、地下鉄サリン事件といったさまざまな事件の公判を傍聴する。時代の変化の中で二人の夫婦は夫婦の絆を深めていく。

茨城県の下妻市に住む竜ヶ崎桃子は、ロリータ・ファッションをこよなく愛する孤高の高校生である。もう一人の主人公・白百合イチゴは、レディース（暴走族）の一員であり、桃子の父親の作ったベルサーチの偽物を買いに来たことをきっかけに、桃子の家に出入りするようになる。イチゴは、自分が所属する暴走族の総長が引退する時、代官山にいるらしい有名な伝説の刺繍家に「ありがとう」と入れてもらった特攻服を着たいと願い、資金を稼ぐために桃子を引き連れパチンコ屋に繰り出す。桃子は初めてのパチンコであったが、偶然連チャンし、易々と自分の服代とイチゴの刺繍のための資金を稼ぎ出す。イチゴは代官山に詳しい桃子を伴い伝説の刺繍家を探しに行くが、その刺繍家を見つけることはできず、イチゴは深く落ち込む。見かねた桃子は自分が刺繍を請け負う。不眠不休で刺繍をし、見事な刺繍入りの特攻服が仕上がった。その素晴らしさを見て、イチゴは感動を覚え、素直に感謝をする。その言葉を聞いて桃子は今までに感じたことのない不思議な感覚を覚え、これをきっかけに、二人の間に友情が芽生え始める。

目黒区の住宅街の路上で頭部に独特な“突き傷”がある元暴力団員の死体が見つかる事件が発生し、警視庁捜査一課の合田警部補は被害者の身辺を調査し始める。その一方、ある法務省刑事局の職員が同じような“突き傷”のある遺体となって見つかる。合田は警察内部のしがらみに苦労しながらも、元暴力団員と法務省職員の両方に、ある弁護士が関係していたことを知る。やがて捜査線上に水沢という謎の青年の存在が浮上してくる。
