原作者のモンキー・パンチは、当時放送されていたアニメに不満を持っていたため、アニメ化に反対していた。アニメ化の説得材料として13分弱のパイロットフィルムが製作された。この作品の出来のよさとリアルな描写に感動したモンキー・パンチはぜひアニメ化をお願いしたいとアニメ製作にOKを出した。
