元海軍中佐の前田時造は郊外にある、エレベーターのない団地の一室に住んでいる。時造には妻と二人の子供がおり、芸能プロダクションで勤める息子の実と、流行作家の愛人である娘の友子を使って金を稼いでいた。実は会社の経理である三谷幸枝と深い仲にあったが、幸枝から別れを切り出されてしまう。念願だった旅館の開業が決まったので、彼女は芸能プロダクションも辞めるというのだ。
