クリスマスイブの夜。サンタの存在など信じないと思い始めた少年だが、ベッドの中でトナカイの鈴の音が聞こえないかと耳をすます。真夜中近く、鈴の代わりに汽車の走る音が聞こえてくる。驚いた少年が窓を見ると、家の前に大きな蒸気機関車が走り込んでくる。玄関を飛び出した少年に、車掌はそれが北極行きの急行“ポーラー・エクスプレス”だと告げ、乗らないかと誘う。戸惑う少年だが、やがて動き始めた列車につい飛び乗る。
