Dave began his writing career in 1993 as one of the original writers on NBC's "Late Night With Conan O'Brien." After more than 400 shows, Dave moved to Los Angeles in 1995 and landed a job at Walt Disney Feature Animation in the movie "Tarzan." It was at this time that he met a little-known animation studio called Pixar, who asked him to help develop his second feature, (Toy Story would be released later that year) The Life of Insect ". This led to a contract with the studio and for the next six years he worked on almost every Disney Pixar animation or production film. Including the script for "The New Wave of the Emperor" as well as co-written 'Finding Nemo'. He was nominated for an Oscar and BAFTA for Best Original Screenplay for Nemo, as well as a BAFTA for New Groove.

Trudie Styler, a documentarian, had been allowed to film the production of Kingdom of the Sun/The Emperor's New Groove as part of the deal that originally brought her husband Sting to the project. As a result, Styler recorded on film much of the struggle, controversy, and troubles that went into making the picture (including the moment when producer Fullmer called Sting to inform the pop star that his songs were being deleted from the film). Styler's completed documentary, The Sweatbox, premiered at the Toronto Film Festival on September 13, 2002. Disney owns the rights to the documentary and has not released it on home video or DVD.

意地悪でごう慢な王様クスコは、魔女イズマの恨みをかってラマの姿に変えられてしまう。城を追われたクスコと、人のいい農夫パチャによる珍道中の物語。 とにかく楽しませてくれる逸品だ。ディズニー・アニメの中ではスケールの大きさこそないものの、ノリで勝負とばかりに、はじけたキャラたちが次々とギャグを繰り出す痛快コメディとなっている。たとえば、クスコとパチャのかけ合いや、魔女イズマと家来クロンクの悪役コンビはじつによい味を出している。特にクロンクのボケっぷりは爆笑必至だ。 本作は、わかりやすいキャラクター設定に、わかりやすいギャグが満載な気持ちのよい作品。ごう慢だった王様が何よりも大切な「友情」に気づくというテーマも作品に無理なくとけ込んでいる。作品がシンプルなだけに子ども向きかと思いきや、案外このテイストは、大人の方がハマってしまうのではないだろうか？
