Ichiro Sasaki, 35, is working for a small training school in Tokyo. Though his work and his life are rather dull, he at least gets along somewhat well with his young daughter. He recieves a phone call one day, informing him of the sudden death of one of his colleagues. Shortly after this shocking news, his wife who is now living apart cuts him down further by telling him, "You don't see anything." While walking in the night, Ichiro is struck by an idea: why don't we go there? He heads off holding his daughter's hand. And thus begins a strange little tale of an ordinary father and his daughter.

Three strangers gather in search of an elusive cherry blossom. The tree hardly matters after a while, though, as they stumble into one funny and revealing episode after another.

フリーライターの“俺”（伊勢谷友介）は、「月刊　黒い本」の美人編集長（水野美紀）から、仮死体験できるという“死にモドキ”を使って死後の世界をルポするよう依頼される。“俺”は、友人でアル中のオルゴール職人、エンドー（松尾スズキ）を強引に誘い、共に旅に出ることに。彼らは元SM嬢で自殺願望を持つサヨコ（菊地凛子）、ヤクザの目玉のおっちゃん（岩松了）とその弟分のチョロリ（ふせえり）などと偶然合流しながら旅を続ける。やがて“俺”とサヨコは、手掛かりとなる情報を得て臨死体験ショーに入ってみることに。そのショーに出ている半分男（村松利史）が古い言い伝えを知っており、師匠（三谷昇）と呼ばれる男が“死にモドキ”使いの末裔だという。まもなく“俺”とエンドーは師匠が住むというホームレスだらけの奇妙な島に上陸する。そこで同じく“死にモドキ”を求めて行方不明になっていたカメラマンの真島（松重豊）が現れる。そして師匠から“死にモドキ”の正体を聞く。それはかつて、海女が海に潜る時に無酸素状態を維持させるために使っていた“虫”だという。こうして“死にモドキ”をめぐる騒動は、“俺”の命を懸けた不思議な旅が終わるまで続くのだった。

10歳の時に出会った恋人・エミ（黒木メイサ）の病を治したい一心で医者の道を歩む青年・熊川鉄矢（窪塚洋介）。ある日エミの父親を死に至らしめた山火事事件の犯人・ドン（エディソン・チャン）が刑務所から脱走する。

現在、都市生活を営む人々の多くは、心に何らかの闇を持っている。そして、そこから来る症状とは？　伊良部総合病院の地下にある神経科に勤務する精神科医・伊良部一郎（松尾スズキ）は、病院の跡取り息子。ヒョウ柄のシャツとブーツに白衣という出で立ちも怪しいが、性格はいい加減、お気楽、マザコン、無茶、凶暴、患者への対応はテキトーで話を聞いてないし、ともかくメチャクチャである。いつも一緒にいるお色気ナースのマユミちゃん（MAIKO）は、ほとんど伊良部をシカトしているが、趣味が注射という所だけは共通。そんな伊良部が最近ハマっているのが、近所のプールで泳ぐこと。プールで泳ぐことに夢中になっている男がここにもひとり。大型アウトレットモールの開発担当・大森和雄（田辺誠一）。妻一人、愛人一人、そして仕事もできる男だ。現在抱えているプロジェクトはそれなりに忙しく、気も遣う。ストレスを感じる日々が続くようになり、偶然見た雑誌の特集記事の影響で、何となく水泳を始める。そのお陰で体調は少しずつ落ち着く。しかし、そのうちにまた忙しくなり水泳ができなくなると、てきめんに体調が悪くなる。自分ではストレスを解消するためにプールに通っているはずが、徐々に「プール依存症」に。だんだんとその症状はエスカレートし、徹夜仕事のちょっとした合間にも、プールに向かってしまう有様。一方、中堅メーカーに勤務する営業マン・田口哲也（オダギリジョー）は、ある日突然、24時間勃ちっ放しという「継続性勃起症」に悩まされるように。泌尿器科に駆け込み、たらい回された末に、伊良部の元にたどりつく。女性に対してはっきりモノがいえない、自己を発散する事ができない性格。そんな田口に対して伊良部はあっさり言う。「何か心に引っかかることがあるんじゃないですか？」。妻・佐代子は同僚と浮気をし、自分の元を去った。しかし、いまだ妻への想いは捨てがたいのか、夢を見たりしてしまう。そんな自分が情けない。しかしどうすることもできない。何をやっても治らない勃起。彼は心に引っかかりを持ったまま会社へ行き、さらには接待旅行で温泉まで行く羽目に…。取り巻く状況は悪化する一方で、病気が治る気配がない。そんな田口に対してまたしても伊良部は言う。「その別れた女の所へ行って、おもいっきり文句を言ってやろう」と…。

妻子に逃げられ生きる目的を失った水木譲司（奥田瑛ニ）は、ダンボールの紙片に描いた絵を売るホームレスの画家。その才能に目をつけた画商の今日子（黒沢あすか）は画壇にデビューさせようとするが、彼は断る。そんな中、酒に溺れる譲司の肉体は病魔に蝕まれていた。

Winter Days is a 2003 animated film, directed by Kihachirō Kawamoto. It is based on one of the renku (collaborative linked poems) in the 1684 collection of the same name by the 17th-century Japanese poet Bashō. The creation of the film followed the traditional collaborative nature of the source material – the visuals for each of the 36 stanzas were independently created by 35 different animators. As well as many Japanese animators, Kawamoto assembled leading names of animation from across the world. Each animator was asked to contribute at least 30 seconds to illustrate their stanza, and most of the sequences are under a minute (Yuriy Norshteyn's, though, is nearly two minutes long).

Set in the late 1950s, when geisha culture was threatened by moral crusades, it tells the story of Omacha (Miyamoto Maki), a young girl who sees the geisha life as a way to lift her poverty-stricken family from their hand-to-mouth existence. Through her eyes, we see the protocols and complex financial relationships which dictate the running of the geisha house. Fukasaku's film is a work of great delicacy with moments of hypnotic beauty, and his tender direction, often touched with a sense of wonder, fills the screen with lovingly constructed scenes. At its heart is the poignant situation of the women who must sacrifice their normal relationships to live an ambiguous life in which they are a key part of society while being kept, for the most part, on its periphery, like perpetual mistresses.
