Armen is an employee of the State Archive, an irrepressible young man, who is not indifferent to the grief, injustice, and meanness of other's. Armen feels responsible for solving these problems, even though they have no direct bearing on him.

Calm of the mountain village is disturbed by the investigation on stray sheep. Four shephards, living in Armenian highlands, cut a stray sheep for a dinner. Revaz, their neighbour and owner of the sheep, soon appears. Shephards even manage to agree on "ransom" but novice police lieutenant interferes with the deal trying to start an official investigation.

1920. Last days of the first Armenian Republic. Armenian Army fights on two fronts: war with Turkish army in the west, and Red Army incursion and Bolshevik mutiny in the northeast. Hayk Saroyan returns to his native provincial town from Russia to assume a minor post at Dashnak Army command center. His brother Gevorg, captain at the same command center, is a real patriot prefering death to "eternal exile", army power to relegious mercifullness. Very soon a suspicion creeps inside him: his beloved brother is Bolshevik spy.
