The oldest of the three talented McKimson brothers began his career with Disney in 1928, assistant to Norman Ferguson. His next sojourn was with the fledgling animation team ofHugh Harman and Rudolf Ising, who went on to inaugurate the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoons for Warner Brothers, under the auspices of Leon Schlesinger. Harman and Ising eventually moved on after a dispute over money, while Tom stayed on as animator and layout artist with Robert Clampett's unit at Schlesinger's 'Termite Terrace'. Tom was instrumental in developing the Bugs Bunny character and is credited with creating the characters of Tweetie Pie and Beaky Buzzard. From 1947 until his retirement in 1972, Tom worked for Dell Comics/Western Publishing as art director and illustrator, creating drawings for Bugs Bunny and Road Runner comic strips and colouring books. As in the classic fable, the grasshopper plays his fiddle and lives for the moment, while the industrious ants squirrel away massive amounts of food for the winter. With his song, he's able to convince at least one small ant until the queen arrives and scares him back to work. The queen warns the grasshopper of the trouble he'll be in, come winter. Winter comes, and the grasshopper, near starvation, stumbles across the ants, who are having a full-on feast in their snug little tree. They take him in and warm him up. A narrator sings the opening stanzas of the classic poem while we see the house at rest. Santa lands on the roof, comes down the chimney, and opens his bag. The toys march out and decorate the tree, with the toy soldiers shooting balls from their cannon, a toy airplane stringing a garland like skywriting, and the toy firemen applying snow. A blimp delivers the star to the top. Meanwhile, Santa fills the stockings. His laughter awakens the children, who sneak out. The toys rush to their places, and Santa escapes up the chimney just in time.
