第1次世界大戦下のドイツ帝国。プロイセン軍人貴族の家庭に育った青年リヒトホーフェンは、戦闘機部隊に加わり、瞬く間に頭角を現わし始める。正々堂々と戦い、敗者にも手を差しのべる彼の高潔な戦いぶりは敵からも一目置かれ、やがてトレードマークの赤い機体から《レッド・バロン》の異名を全欧中に轟かしていく。だが一方、その名声は軍上層部からプロパガンダに利用され、度重なる親友の戦死も重なり、彼を疲弊させていく。
