Dagmar Brink, a young female pianist, dies by suicide in her Stockholm apartment. She leaves all her belongings to her next-door neighbors, an author and his wife. Perplexed and curious, they investigate the girl's reasons for taking her life. As they visit Dagmar's friends, acquaintances and former boyfriends, her story unfolds. She stands out as loner, a woman no one could really grasp, always in want of something that nobody she met could make out.

Director Björkman travels to Copenhagen with his daughter Astrid, who is together with a certain Count Erik Lejonsköld. They will take their father-in-law's car and go on a honeymoon to the Riviera. But "Count" gets a telegram from London calling him to a business meeting. Dad Björkman and the daughter decide to go to the Riviera while the suitor must come later. The real Count Erik Lejonsköld comes home to his office in Stockholm and is congratulated on the wedding by his staff. But he did not get married at all, it was a scammer instead of Henry. Erik searches the newspaper notice his wedding announced in Copenhagen and sees a chance to expose the imposter.

Lydia is a problem for her husband. She is wasteful and the family have huge debts. To solve the financial problems, Lydia is planning to marry her daughter to a wealthy acquaintance.

16-year-old Marianne will be confirmed. She is reluctant to do this, but her mother is more than happy for her to complete the confirmation. Marianne travels to a rectory in the country where she and a group of other girls will live while they read to the priest. On Midsummer's Eve, she meets by chance one of the other confirmands' fiancés and the feeling arises.

The story revolves around a collective of variety artists. A stolen safety deposit box theft gets all in toruble.

Helga Breder is a young, spoiled girl. To her beloved Jörgen she says that she, as a modern young woman, is multi-talented and can do whatever she likes. Jörgen bets that she can't work as a house-maid but, if she manages it, he will buy her a diamond ring. Helga becomes a house-maid at Vinger Mansion and falls in love with an inventor, Bertil Frigård, who lives there.

Lady Lillian Gardner is unhappily married to rich businessman Richard Gardner. On a banquet she meets Hugo Paton whom she falls in love with.

Widower Robert Rossiter lives in New York with his two teenage children. When he visits a fashion house one day, he falls in love with the store clerk Joyce Roamer.
