江戸の方々で、口に六文銭をくわえさせられた遺体が発見される。南町奉行所では役立たず扱いされる同心だが、実は仕事人の中村主水は、公務として捜査を始める。一方、主水ら仕事人の元締めである三味線弾きのおりくは、見つかった遺体が仕事人ばかりだと気づき、その裏に大掛かりな陰謀があることを知る。主水らはやがて黒幕が江戸中の“仕事”を独占しようとたくらむ大物仕事人・庄兵衛の一味であることを突き止める。
