弘前中央署に、札幌署から堂垣内と佐藤の二人の刑事が訪ねて来た。彼らの依頼は、二年前札幌でおきた現金輸送車襲撃事件の証拠として残されたりんごの種の品種分析である。早速、片山刑事が二人をりんご試験場に案内したが、りんごの種から品種分析することは不可能であった。失意の二人を誘って入った喫茶店は、片山が今朝出会った少年たけしの母親・澄江の店であった。
