Set in the 1930s in the international city of Shanghai, the film follows the extravagant life and times of a group of jazz musicians, living from one advance paycheck to the next, as the country teeters over the brink into the Second Sino-Japanese War.

Internationally acclaimed for his cinematic realism and social commitment, Kaneto Shindo based the story of THE HORIZON on his sister's experiences. The film concerns Hideo, a young girl who leaves Japan in 1920 to settle her family's debt by being sold in marriage to a Japanese farmer in San Francisco. Over the next 20 years the couple works hard and raises 4 children. After Pearl Harbor is attacked they are interned with other Japanese immigrants in a camp, losing both their land and their assets. Hideo has now been uprooted twice and has to adjust to her son's going to war and her daughters' post-war assimilation and marriage to Americans despite her protests. But Hideo is a survivor and she awaits a new immigrant from Japan with hope.

戦前の昭和、岡山の寒村に祖母と二人で暮らす青年・犬丸継男（いぬまるつぎお）は、村一番の秀才として名高い。ある日、村の風習である夜這いを知り、彼もこれに溺れるようになる。 徴兵検査を受けた継男は、当時の医学では不治の伝染病として忌み嫌われていた結核と診断され、「名誉の出兵」が叶わなくなる。このことが村人達に知れ渡り、女たちも彼を役立たずと馬鹿にするようになる。 村八分のような状況となった彼から恋人のやすよも離れ、次第に追い詰められた彼は村人達に対して、復讐を決行する。

A documentary profiling a Japanese taiko drumming group based in the remote Sado Island, Japan. The film blurs the line between real-life documentary footage of the troupe's training and practice regimes, and staged performances of their varied musical acts, with sets designed by artist Tadanori Yokoo and an additional experimental electronic music score by Toshi Ichiyanagi.

貧しい農家に生まれた後の葛飾北斎こと鉄蔵は幼いときに幕府御用達の鏡磨師、中島伊勢の養子となり、絵師の弟子として修業を積むも、不行跡で何人もの師から破門を言い渡され、現在は佐七(後の曲亭馬琴)の家に娘のお栄とともに居候中の身。だが定職にも就かず、毎日ぶらぶらしている彼ら父娘に佐七の女房・お百は不満を抱いていた。そんなある日、鉄蔵は不思議な魔性を持つ若い美女、お直と出会い、興味をそそられるのだが…。

The story is set in Bakumatsu and revolves around the Bunta Sugawara character, a yakuza (of course :) but instead of a modern yakuza/gangster, he's a gambler/bakuto). After he kills someone and gets wound, is saved by a blind woman (Mitsuko Baishô), who took care of him. They has a happy time under the protection of the Tomisaburo Wakayama character, an oybun. But of course, happy time doesn't last long. The story is also related to Okada Izo and the Shinsengumi (w/ Kondo Isami played by Makoto Sato)

In 1930, the chance meeting of a novelist and one of his fans opens the door to a series of mysterious events culminating in the death of a wealthy industrialist who may have been leading a double life.

A bad cop is engaged in a violent chase to catch a yakuza boss. In his absence his wife runs away with another man, who turns out to be the very same man that her husband is hunting. Once he discovers this, he loses his nerve and turns in his badge. But the chase turns into a personal vendetta where the ex-cop plans to wipe out the entire gang.

In front of Sagami Detention Center. Shosuke, the owner of a strip joint called "Shunpu Music," welcomes Okoma, a stripper who has been locked up for public indecency. Shosuke immediately takes the paroled Okoma to the police station to greet her, and meets a young new detective, Matsuta Obara, who has just been transferred. But the two don't get along from the moment they meet...

In Part I we see the young would-be swordsman setting out to achieve greatness in war, achieving nothing because fighting on the losing side, & then beginning his long period of wandering & training, with the goal always in mind of his duel with Kojiro. Part II builds toward that great duel on Ganryu Island, with considerable focus on Musashi's planning & forethought as to how to gain an advantage.

Kingoro Tamai moves with his wife and son to the port city of Wakamatsu. He organizes the Tamai-gumi, a stevedore group, to vie for work with two other powerful groups. Gingo is Tamai's chief rival who falls in love with the latter's wife and tries to kill Tamai.

The clerk of a trading company happens to have a large sum of money from his company in his possession. His girlfriend pressures him into fleeing with the money...
