ジョン・A・ルッソの原作を、CM監督出身のジョージ・A・ロメロが監督した歴史的作品であり、ゾンビ映画の記念碑的作品。全編に横溢するカニバリズムや反モラル的ラストなど当時のタブーに挑戦した内容は、根底に流れる独自のヒューマニズムが制作当時の世相を反映しており、賛否両論あったがロングランを続けた。結果として、ニューヨーク近代美術館にも所蔵されるカルト・クラシックとなっており、アメリカ国立フィルム登録簿に永久保存登録されている。父の墓参りの途中、バーバラと兄のジョニーは生ける屍に襲われる。兄を殺された恐怖と悲しみの中、バーバラは近くの民家に逃げ込む。民家には黒人青年のベンのほか、若いカップル、中年夫婦と大怪我を負ったその娘が集まってくるが、外部との連絡も取れないまま、周囲はゾンビの群れに取り囲まれていた。ドアや窓を塞ぎゾンビの侵入を防いだうえで脱出の方策を探るベンに対し、地下室に籠ることにこだわるハリーが対立する。ゾンビたちが人間を食い殺していることをテレビで知ったバーバラたちは、最寄りの避難所への脱出を試みる。
