汐留駅の倉庫の片隅に、荷主、荷受人ともに不明のジュラルミン・トランクが一つ光っていた。腐敗臭がひどい。開けると、女の死体が出た。死体の目からはコンタクト・レンズが摘出され、解剖の結果、絞殺死、年齢三十歳前後、肋膜を患ったことがある等が判った。トランクの発送先が大阪天王寺駅であったことから、トランク詰殺人事件捜査本部は東京と大阪に設置された。天王寺駅でトランクを受附けた者の証言では、二十五、六歳色白の男が、野球帽の少年を伴い、リヤカーで運んで来たという。さらに、梅田駅の倉庫係の証言によれば、色白の男が隅田川駅から梅田駅に到着したトランクを引取りに来たこと、そして同じ日に、やはり色白の男が天王寺駅から汐留駅にそのトランクを送っているという。タクシー運転手の口から、重いトランクを茶臼山の近くまで運び、茶臼山に遊ぶ野球帽の少年がリヤカーを貸し、トランクを天王寺駅まで運んだことも判った。殺された女の身許が判明した。草間文子といい、化粧品セールスのため関西に出張するといい、行方不明、過去に肋膜を患い、銀行預金五十六万円を持っていた。が、そのうち五十四万円が引出されていた。二十五歳位の色白の男によってだ。長田部長刑事、山形刑事は、隅田川駅へトランクを運んだ男を挙げた。隅田館というアパートから二十五歳位の男に頼まれて運んだという。隅田館に踏みこんだ時には、その男は姿を消していた。管理人の話では、男は吉村春夫といい、化粧品セールスの女が出入りしていたという。吉村の友人から、花山あや子という恋人がいたことも知った。あや子のアパートに張込みを続け、逃亡寸前の彼女を捕えた。吉村とともに、九時三十分の東京駅発、筑紫号で博多へ逃亡を企てたのだ。待合せ場所は熱海。すでに列車は熱海を出ている。あや子を忘れられない吉村は、上り列車に乗っていることが分った。終着駅東京で、吉村は捕えられた。
