金と名声を得るため、中国へと赴いた白人の傭兵のウィリアムとトバールは、ようやく万里の長城にたどり着き、そこで思いも寄らぬ光景を目の当たりにする。長城では、完全武装した大軍団が、敵を迎え撃つべく臨戦態勢に入っていたが、そこへ巨大な地響きとともに、はるか山の向こうから、未知の怪物の大群が怒濤のごとく押し寄せてきたのだった。その恐るべき正体は、60年に1度現われるという伝説の怪物“とうてつ”だった。

はるかな昔、偉大なる善の魔法使いマーリンと邪悪な魔法使いモルガナとの死闘が繰り広げられ、マーリンはついにモルガナを封印する。だがマーリンは自らも傷つき、いつか現われる後継者によって戦いは真に決着すると予言を残して世を去る。マーリンの弟子バルサザールは予言の後継者を1000年待ち続け、ようやく現代のニューヨークでその人物を見つけ出す。だが、その後継者とはデイヴという何をやっても冴えない青年だった。

孤児のダスタンは、国王にその勇気を讃えられ下級階級から王子として迎えられた。 ダスタンと兄王子二人はコシュカーン征服への遠征途中、叔父ニザムと長兄タス王子が聖なる都アラムートの裏切りを訴えアラムート攻めが決定した、 次兄のガーシヴ王子率いる軍が正門を攻めている間に、ダスタンは東門を制圧する。本殿制圧中にアラムートから逃走しようとした騎士と戦ったダスタンは、偶然に、水晶の柄の内側に「時間の砂」を詰めた短剣を手にいれる。
