ある夜、町を牛耳る五光会の五人のボスのうち一人が射殺された。現場にはスペードのエースのカード。慌てた残りの四人は至急対策を協議し、殺し屋プロダクションに早速護衛の殺し屋を注文した。というのも、彼らは終戦のどさくさに紛れて当時の上司であった須藤氏を殺し、莫大な物資を横領して町を支配していた。その須藤の息子である丈太郎の通り名がスペードのジョーであり、彼から五光会のそれぞれの元に殺す順番として一から五までの数字が書かれたカードが送られてきていたのだった。こうしてボスらの護衛のため、プロダクションの厳重なテストをくぐり抜けた殺し屋たちが一同に集められた。爆薬入りのソロバンを扱う者、下駄に手裏剣を仕込んだ者…などなど、自分の仕事にこだわりをもつ個性的な殺し屋たちが今、ジョーを探して始末するべく一斉に町に繰り出した。

On a small island, inhabited by only fourteen hundred people, a young fisherman's son, Shinji falls in love with Hatsue, the daughter of the richest and most difficult man on the island. Despite their differences in class, they begin to meet and rumors spread of them having an illicit affair. Soon after, Shinji jumps into a stormy sea to help a ship in distress. The vessel turns out to be owned by Hatsue's arrogant father, who now becomes an understanding and sympathetic parent and allows the two lovers to marry.

Handsome young Katsuta tries to follow the yakuza code, but even his boss doesn't believe in it. Diamond Fuyu is less ethical, and allows the idiotic Tetsu to trick a schoolgirl he fancies, Hanako, into a type of bonded prostitution. Because of gang conflict, the Izu family (to whom Katsuta belongs) has their last gambling den taken over, and he seeks revenge. This brings him back into contact with a former lover who is also a card trickster - she is also Diamond Fuyu's sister, and is now married to Okaru-Hachi, who has mastered a clever card cheating trick called Okaru, which involves the deft use of mirrors.
