岩手で不審なトラックを追跡したパトカーが銃撃される事件が発生。陸上自衛隊の警務部長・江見は、内閣調査室の利倉とともに捜査を進め、一部の自衛隊員によるクーデター計画《皇帝のいない八月》の存在を知る。同じころ、かつて江見の部下だった藤崎はクーデターに加わる一部隊を率い、博多発東京行きの特急さくら号を乗っ取る。だが政府による鎮圧作戦が始まり、藤崎の隊は孤立。藤崎は最後の手段で乗客たちを殺すと脅す。

新車を買って、あこがれの北海道をドライブする欽也（武田鉄矢）は、一人旅の朱美（桃井かおり）をナンパして二人で旅を続ける。途中、出所したばかりの中年男・勇作（高倉健）と知り合い、3人は旅を共にすることに。やがて勇作は、「自分を待っていてくれるなら、家の前に黄色いハンカチを掲げておいてくれ」と妻に手紙を書いたことを打ち明ける。

The film follows the story of Sugi Toranosuke, a ronin, who returns to his home town of Edo many years after his attempted suicide as a sickly child. Rescued and adopted by a master swordsman, he has grown into a master swordsman and a very kind gentleman. The time is around 1868 the year that the nails were finally put into the coffin containing the feudal system that nurtured and sustained the samurai. Sugi is confused and unsure about what is happening but his teacher wants him out of the chaos of the multiple power struggles between the various clans.

One day an innocent-looking girl in white clothes appears on board of a ramshackle boat The owner of the boat, Okin, decides to let Mari stay with him without asking her any questions. Turmoil ensues with the reaction of the crew when the runaway girl starts working alongside with them.

A young female samurai comes upon a dying messenger and agrees to deliver the scroll he was carrying to its destination. After serving his sentence, Yakuza family member Toshin-gumi Umebayashi is released from prison. When her only relative, her elder brother is accused of robbing and murdering an old woman loan-shark, pretty, young Kiriko travels from her home in Kyushu to Tokyo to get Japan's top lawyer to defend her brother. Unfortunately her naive idealism is shattered when the lawyer refuses to take the case based on her insufficient funds. What follows is a long determined revenge plot that sees the heroine become a Tokyo bar hostess and worse to punish the lawyer. The plot thickens with another murder mystery and a sleuthing reporter.

A young woman begins murdering all those responsible for her ailing father's condition. Because the girl is so outwardly sweet and innocent, the detective looking into the deaths does not suspect her.

After moving in to their dream home, newlyweds decide to rent out their second floor to save money. They soon discover the woe of being landlords.
