尾道市。中学生の斉藤一夫の学級に、一文字違いの転校生・斉藤一美がやって来た。一美は幼稚園時代の友達だといって一夫に付きまとうが、一夫はまったく覚えていない。下校中、2人は神社の階段からもつれ合うように転げ落ち、目覚めるとなぜか互いの体が入れ替わっていた。突然女の子の体になった一夫、男の子になった一美、混乱する2人は、元に戻るまで外見に合わせてそれぞれ相手の家で生活することになるのだが……。

早大文学部に通うまり子は、アルバイト先で知り合った同じ大学の橋本と同棲していた。そんなある日、以前つきあっていたルポライターの恒雄が戻ってきた…。

Bakyo is a talented but unsuccessful rakugo artist. The very successful Rokyu wants to take Bakyo under his wings, but Bakyo refuses, claiming that Rokyu's rakugo is compromised by the elements of kabuki. But Bakyo changes his mind and determines to learn (or steal) Rokyu's craft and makes it his own.

A young girl is being asked about a man with whom she was keeping company, as her grandmother plays a lament on a shamisen. Then the focus changes to a couple arriving from Tokyo - the woman returning to her home, the man an escapee from the yakuza. The man doesn't seem to mind when the woman sells her favours to tourists at the local bar, just as she seems to take his attentions to Yuki, a blind girl, with equanimity.

主人公は岡山出身の山口善助。無学で貧しいゆえに実社会で辛酸をなめてきた男である。がゆえに「軍隊こそ天国」と信じる男の無垢さと悲しさを、昭和史のなかに描くというスタイルは前作同様。山正のような男がもう一人いたら？
