Normah is married to a workaholic painter who is more intent on making money out of his art than showing concern and affect for her. She couldn't care less about his artistic pursuits and spends time dolling herself up. Her beauty catches the eye of Jamal, a car salesman, who pursues her to the neglect of his work, wife and children. Initially reluctant, Normah eventually gives in to Jamal's attention and a heady adulterous affair follows. Manis and her fisherman father receive a guest named Suleiman at their humble kampung house. He is well-liked by them both and becomes a frequent visitor who helps out with the daily chores. Unbeknownst to Manis, the young man is in fact a prince-in-disguise. So a romance between a royal and a commoner blossoms, as the couple exchange teasing pantuns at the next opportunity - while gathering wood, or while tidying up the rumah ibu. All is bliss when Manis agrees to marry Suleiman in secret even after finding out his true identity. Separation of the loving pair beckons when the prince receives news from the palace and returns to his ailing father, who at his death bed agrees to a royal intermarriage between his son and a princess from a neighbouring monarchy. A family reconciliation and cursed tragedy ensue.

Tengku Iskandar helps to run his father's business in Singapore and is known among his friends as Ariffin. He is a hardworking and passionate young man who helps his friends in distress. He is also on good terms with Marhani who works as a nurse in a hospital in Johor Bahru. When Ariffin is assigned by his father to travel to Jakarta to manage their business there, he takes the opportunity to confess his love towards Marhani and makes a vow to return to affirm their marriage. Unfortunately, the Jakarta-bound airplane Ariffin boards crashes. No survivors are reported. Marhaini is devastated by the news and decides to take a break from work at the hospital. Ariffin's father too falls ill after hearing the tragedy. Marhani's younger sister, who is also a nurse, is employed to take care of Ariffin (Tengku Iskandar)’s father and young siblings Tengku Shah and Tengku Ngah. But the junior tengku-tengku are too much to handle for Marhani’s sister.

Karim (Abdullah Chik) and Khatijah (Rose Yatimah) are undergraduates at the University of Malaya pursuing degrees in Medicine and History respectively. At their wits end, the local police enlist the help of talented police inspector Dasuki to trap and end the oily man’s mischief. Orang Minyak was digitally restored by the Asian Film Archive in 2018 using a 16mm black & white composite release print from its collection.
