元特殊部隊隊長のアメリカ人ジェフは、警備会社を始めるため、ビジネスと家族旅行を兼ねてナポリを訪れた。ジェフが軍時代の知人と商談する間、妻のリンと娘のミカエラはポンペイ遺跡の見学ツアーに参加するが、その矢先、ベスビオ火山が突然大噴火を起こす。遺跡博物館に逃れるツアー客たちだったが、ポンペイが再び火砕流にのまれるのも時間の問題だった。そんな中、ジェフは昔の仲間に協力を仰ぎ、家族を救うため奔走する。
