A researcher develops a hybrid species of rice to help combat hunger in China.

A medical student is admitted to hospital with a mild neck injury, but her condition deteriorates rapidly and she dies in agony. Her classmates conclude that her death was due to malpractice, but they are blocked at every turn in their investigation.

1941年12月。日本軍は真珠湾攻撃に成功したのに続き、中国の上海を攻撃するように。11歳の英国人少年ジムは、日本の“ゼロ戦”のパイロットになるのが夢だったが、戦火を逃れて脱出を図るものの両親とはぐれてしまい、日本軍に捕まって強制収容所で暮らすことに。そこで厳しい管理下に置かれるが、ジムはめげずに、たくましく成長していく。大きな歴史の激動はなおも続き、ジムもそれに巻き込まれていく。
