南北戦争中のアラバマ州のアウル・クリーク鉄橋で、農場主ペイトン・ファーカーが、南軍に味方して鉄橋を破壊しようとしたスパイ容疑で絞首刑にされようとしていた。彼は残してきた農場や妻子のことを思いながら、もう一度家に戻れたらと思いを巡らせる。絞首刑が執行されたが、首を吊るす縄が途中で切れたためファーカーは川に落ち、そのまま逃げ出した。銃弾をかいくぐって川を泳ぎ、野山を走り、かろうじて逃げおおせたファーカーは、死に直面する前には思いもしなかったほど樹にも草にも鮮烈な印象を受ける。森の道をたどったファーカーはやがて一軒の家にたどり着く。そこは妻と子供が暮らす自分の家であった。＜1961年制作のフランスの映画。日本では1963年に公開された。1963年アカデミー賞短編実写賞、1962年カンヌ国際映画祭パルム・ドール（短編）を受賞。オリジナルは3部作で構成されているが、『ふくろうの河』は3部（白黒、28分）。ロベール・アンリコは、アメリカ合衆国の作家アンブローズ・ビアスの、南北戦争下の兵士と市民を描いた短編小説集『生のさなかにも』から3つの短編を選んでそれぞれ短編映画とした。第3部である『ふくろうの河』は「アウル・クリーク橋の一事件」を映画化したものである。1964年にはアメリカのテレビドラマシリーズ『トワイライト・ゾーン』の第5シーズンで142話「アウル・クリーク橋の一事件」としても放送された。＞

The first 8,000 m peak to be climbed was the Annapurna I, three years earlier in 1950, by a French expedition including Maurice Herzog, Lionel Terray, Gaston Rébuffat, Jean Crouzy, Marcel Schutz, Jacques Oudot, Francis de Noyelle an cinematographer Marcel Ichac, the only one who had already an Himalayan experience (see 'Karakoram', film of 1936 awarded at Venice Film Festival in 1938). It's an epic adventure filmed in difficult conditions by an expert of mountain film and which ended in an anticlimax of disasters and injuries.
