同僚の浅川みゆきから“家に幽霊がいる”と相談を受けた山際悦子は、夫の辰雄が務める病院の心療内科にみゆきを連れて行き、彼女が“家族”という概念を欠落させている、という不可解な診断結果を聞き当惑する。その一方で、病院で遭遇した新任の外科医・真壁司郎に違和感を抱き、彼と行動を共にする辰雄の異変に不安を募らせていく悦子だったが…。

数日間行方不明だった夫の真治がようやく家に戻って来たものの、それまでとはどこか違う彼の態度や言動に、妻の鳴海は戸惑いといらだちを募らせることに。けれども、そんな彼女にはお構いなしに、真治は毎日ふらふらと散歩に出掛けては、何やら不可思議な行動を繰り返す。そのころ町では、とある一家が惨殺されるなど、奇妙な出来事が次々と発生。ジャーナリストの桜井は、何かがおかしいと、独自の調査を開始する。

山間にある全寮制の女学園。生徒たちの憧れの的である美しい女生徒アヤは、なぜか部屋にこもりきりになってしまう。それからしばらく後、生徒たちが次々と姿を消し、やがて水死体で発見されるという奇怪な事件が起きる。やがて、学園内ではアヤが皆に呪いをかけているという噂が広がっていく。アヤに憧れていた生徒のひとりであるミチは、友人たちを次々と失う中で、事件の鍵を握るかもしれないアヤの部屋を訪ねる。

Akiko, a young woman, comes to Vladivostok to meet Matsunaga, a young businessman she has met in Tokyo only once. Akiko finally finds Matsunaga. However, he leaves her again, warning her not to trust strangers in a foreign country. She tries to follow him, but she is attacked by thugs and dumped on the outskirts of town.

The murder of a young girl leaves the inhabitants of a small Japanese village in shock. The body of Emili is found by four classmates with whom she was playing. The murder is never solved. Emili's mother, Asako, is torn by grief and puts a curse on the four girls when they claim not to remember the killer's face. Each of the girls, in their own way, will do penance for their silence.

名優・高倉健が、降旗康男監督とコンビを組んだ20本目で、高倉健の遺作となった作品。 富山の刑務所で指導教官を務める倉島英二に、亡くなった妻・洋子から届いた絵手紙。そこには今まで知らされることの無かった“故郷の海に散骨して欲しい”という洋子の想いが記されていた。その真意を知るために、故郷へ向けて車で一人旅を始める英二。その旅は富山[4]から始まり飛騨高山、京都、瀬戸内、下関、北九州市門司区、そして洋子の故郷である長崎県平戸の漁港・薄香へと続く。風光明媚な地で出会うさまざまな人々と、さまざまな人生。出会いと別れ。そしてそれは英二が洋子の深い愛情に改めて気付かされる旅でもあった。
