Kiyoshi Shigematsu

Yasuo (Hiroshi Abe) grew up as an orphan. He married a woman he loved and they had a son Akira (later played by Takumi Kitamura). Yasuo's life seemed great at the time, but his life totally changed after his wife died in accident. Since that time, Yasuo, who never experienced parents' love himself, has to raise his son Akira alone.

Shunsuke Fujii was a bullied middle school student. He took his own life. A letter left behind referred to his classmate Yu Sanada as a friend. Sayuri Nakagawa was a girl that Shunsuke liked. 東ケ丘中学校2年1組では前学期、野口という男子生徒がいじめによる自殺未遂を起こしていた。野口は家がコンビニのため、“コンビニくん”とあだ名され、店の商品を級友たちに渡していた。遺書にはいじめをしていた3人の名前が記されていたが、公表されなかった。野口は転校し、コンビニは閉店した。そして担任の高橋は休職した。新学期初日。2年1組に、村内（阿部寛）という吃音の臨時教師がやってくる。村内は野口の机を教室に戻し、誰もいない席に声を掛ける。教師たちは事件を解決するため、生徒たちに反省文を書かせていた。それで野口のことを忘れようとしていた生徒たちは、村内の行動に動揺する。村内は毎朝、野口の机に声を掛け続けた。それは生徒だけでなく、ほかの教師や保護者にも波紋を広げていく。生徒の1人、園部真一（本郷奏多）は級友にけしかけられ、1度だけ野口にポテトチップを頼んだことがあった。園部はそのことで深く傷つき、遺書には自分の名前が書かれていたと思い込んでいた。村内が赴任して1ケ月が過ぎたある日、園部は村内に、自分の思いをぶつける。野口はいつもおどけていて、商品を頼まれると嬉しそうに必ず要求以上の品を持ってきたが、実は自分に助けを求めていたのではないか、と。村内は吃音を振り絞るように、人が生きていく上で負うべき責任について語り始める。そして、村内が学校を去る日がやってくる。

とあるフリースクールを訪れた記者の中原（福士誠治）は、子どもたちに絵を教えている恵美（石橋杏奈）の友だちについての話を聞く。恵美と病弱で学校を休みがちな由香（北浦愛）は10歳のころから親友同士で、中学になってもいつも一緒だった。2人を取り巻く者たちもそれぞれに不安や迷いを抱える中、由香の体調が悪化していく。

Sachiko and Yoshida are newlyweds, and have just moved into a newly-constructed apartment with completely white rooms. As the story progresses, Koichi finds unexpected solace from his grief by letting his troubled student visit and meet with his father in the hopes that he will understand the meaning of life and death.
