ある日、アメリカ人眼科医トム・エイヴリーのもとに、一人息子ダニエルの訃報が届く。それは、ダニエルが聖地サンティアゴ・デ・コンポステーラへの巡礼の旅に出た矢先の悲劇だった。フランスとスペインの国境の町までやって来たトム。ダニエルの遺品と遺灰を手にした彼は、息子が巡礼の旅に求めたものが何だったのかを知ろうと、息子に代わり、旅を続けることを決意する。それは、800キロにもおよぶ長旅。その道中、彼は旅の目的も様々な巡礼者たちとの出会いを重ね、少しずつ彼らと打ち解けていくのだが…。
