世界が崩壊してから100年後の未来。復興を果たした人類は、16歳で受ける選択の儀式によって人々を軍・警察にあたるドーントレス、政権を運営するアブネゲーション、教育・研究を担うエリュダイトといった五つの共同体に振り分け、そこで人生を全うすることを強制していた。16歳になったトリスも選択の儀式を迎えるが、どの共同体にも適さない異端者（ダイバージェント）と判断されてしまう。異端者は政府に抹殺されるのを知った彼女は、うそをついてドーントレスへと所属する。
