フランスの巨匠ジャック・リヴェット監督が、「美しき諍い女」に続き再び文豪バルザックに挑んだ文芸ロマンス。19世紀初頭のパリ貴族社会を舞台に、気高き公爵夫人が無骨な将軍に恋愛ゲームを仕掛けたばかりに、それぞれに思いもよらぬ運命を辿るさまを格調高く描き出す。主演は「恋ごころ」のジャンヌ・バリバールと「ポーラＸ」のギョーム・ドパルデュー。 　19世紀初頭のパリ。社交界の華、ランジェ公爵夫人は、舞踏会でナポレオン軍の英雄モンリヴォー将軍と出会う。いまや時の人となったモンリヴォー将軍に興味を抱いたランジェ公爵夫人は、彼を自宅に招き冒険譚を語らせる。あっという間にランジェ公爵夫人の魅力に心奪われてしまったモンリヴォー将軍だったが、ランジェ公爵夫人の思わせぶりな振る舞いに翻弄され続けることに。業を煮やしたモンリヴォー将軍は、彼女を誘拐するという強引な手段に打って出る。思いがけずこれがランジェ公爵夫人の心に火をつける。一転して立場は入れ替わり、モンリヴォー将軍を熱烈に求め始めるランジェ公爵夫人だったが…。

The story of a woman that remained distracted for a long time from her life, from the passions that made her feel alive. The importance of true love is compared with the material value of diamonds.
