木星の衛星エウロパへの有人探査へ向けて、4人の宇宙飛行士が1000日を宇宙ステーションで過ごす検証実験が開始された。任務は順調に進み、滞在900日も過ぎて帰還の日も近づいてきた。だがその矢先、彼らは信じられない光景を見る。眼前の地球であちこちからキノコ雲が立ち上り、地上との交信が不能に陥ったのだ。さらにひとりで脱出しようとしたリーダーのヴァンサンが唯一の帰還手段である連絡船を失わせてしまう。
