1978年、ハロウィン前夜に殺人鬼マイケル・マイヤーズが精神病棟を脱走。10月31日、ハロウィンの夜に街で多くの人が襲われ、犠牲になるという戦慄の事件が起きた。この殺人鬼は動機や感情が不明のため、“ブギーマン”と名付けられて人々から恐れられる。事件で生き延びた唯一の生存者ローリー・ストロードは、精神病棟に収監されたマイケルが再び現れることを想定して訓練を続けていた。そして、40年経ったハロウィンの日に、その悪夢は現実のものとなる。
