1800年。フランスのストラスブール。軽騎兵のフェロー中尉（ハーヴェイ・カイテル）が町の有力者の甥を決闘で傷つけた。“名誉のため”という名目だったが、軍の命令はフェローに厳しかった。その命令を単に伝える使命でフェローのもとを訪れた軽騎兵デュベール中尉（キース・キャラダイン）は、理由もなくフェローに決闘を申し込まれ、名誉のために受けてたち、彼に傷を与えた。この日から二人の宿命的な対決の人生がはじまった。フェローはデュベールとの決闘に執念を燃やし、彼の行く先々に姿を現わした。二度目の対決は、デュベールがアウグスブルグに駐屯していた時だった。決闘で負傷したデュベールに、将軍はこれ以上決闘を続ければ除隊させると告げた。しかし、1806年、リューべックではデュベールがフェローを傷つけて終わるが、1812年ロシア遠征では、奇妙な友情のような感情が芽ばえだし、凍るような寒さの中で互いに手をさしのべあうのだった。そして1814年、ルイ18世が即位したフランス。デュベールは、姉のすすめでアデル（クリスティーナ・レインズ）と結婚し、しあわせで平穏な生活を送っていた。そこにまたしてもフェローが現われ、決闘を申し込んだ。最後の決闘はピストルで行なわれることになった。廃虚に銃声が轟いた。しかし、優勢に立ったデュベールは、フェローから的をはずして発砲し、その場を去っていた。

The family become the housekeepers to a derelict country mansion in the charge of the solicitors. One day the children meet the spirits of two other children who died in the mansion nearly a hundred years prior. The children prepare a magic potion that allows them to travel backwards in time to the era of the ghost children.
