物語の舞台は、第2次世界大戦下の日本。主人公は入院中の母を火事で亡くし、父親の再婚に伴って東京から田舎へ移り住んだ少年・牧眞人（まきまひと）だ。父親の再婚相手は、死んだ母とそっくりな母の妹だった。一風変わった7人の老婆が仕える屋敷に住み始めた眞人。その屋敷の近くには、かつて物語が好きな大おじが建て、忽然と姿を消したという廃墟同然の塔があった。眞人は人の言葉をしゃべるアオサギに導かれ、不思議な世界へと冒険に出る。

For his first film in fourteen years animation director Isao Takahata embarked on a visually sumptuous adaptation of "The Tale of the Princess Kaguya". A dream project for the director that would hopefully establish the recently formed Ghibli Studio 7, created to meet the demands of a new type of modern animation process. But almost immediately the epic production is faced with difficulties and falls dramatically behind schedule. 心を閉ざした少女杏奈は、ぜんそくの療養を目的に親戚が生活している海沿いの村にやって来た。そんなある日、彼女の前に誰もいない屋敷の青い窓に閉じ込められた、きれいなブロンドの少女マーニーが姿を見せる。その出会い以来、杏奈の身の回りでは立て続けに奇妙な出来事が起きるようになるが、それは二人だけの秘密だった。

今は昔、竹取の翁が見つけた光り輝く竹の中からかわいらしい女の子が現れ、翁は媼と共に大切に育てることに。女の子は瞬く間に美しい娘に成長しかぐや姫と名付けられ、うわさを聞き付けた男たちが求婚してくるようになる。彼らに無理難題を突き付け次々と振ったかぐや姫は、やがて月を見ては物思いにふけるようになり……。
