Imamura’s comic treatment of such taboos as voyeurism and incest sparked controversy when the film was released, but The Pornographers has outlasted its critics, and now seems frankly ahead of its time.

ある夜、町を牛耳る五光会の五人のボスのうち一人が射殺された。現場にはスペードのエースのカード。慌てた残りの四人は至急対策を協議し、殺し屋プロダクションに早速護衛の殺し屋を注文した。というのも、彼らは終戦のどさくさに紛れて当時の上司であった須藤氏を殺し、莫大な物資を横領して町を支配していた。その須藤の息子である丈太郎の通り名がスペードのジョーであり、彼から五光会のそれぞれの元に殺す順番として一から五までの数字が書かれたカードが送られてきていたのだった。こうしてボスらの護衛のため、プロダクションの厳重なテストをくぐり抜けた殺し屋たちが一同に集められた。爆薬入りのソロバンを扱う者、下駄に手裏剣を仕込んだ者…などなど、自分の仕事にこだわりをもつ個性的な殺し屋たちが今、ジョーを探して始末するべく一斉に町に繰り出した。
