The year is 1926. It has been three years since the Great Kanto earthquake hit Tokyo. Everything is being rebuilt from the ground up. A young ex-boxer has become a successful businessman, running his various enterprises with his best friend, another boxer whom he accidentally injured in a match. When the latter is found dead, he cannot believe it is suicide and decides to investigate. Sure enough, a group of gangsters is behind his death and, resenting his intrusion, try to ruin him and to pin the murder of his young friend's fiancee on him. At the last minute he shoots it out with the villains and emerges with his reputation intact.

Saburo Kurokawa
Asada Keiko and Kurokawa Saburo are two young college students. When Keiko visits Saburo's house, she meets his father Kokichi and his mother Motoko. A relationship develops between Saburo and Keiko, but Saburo is shaken when his mother tells Keiko the truth about Saburo's past and the secret of his birth.

Takema's classmate, Akiko, is the daughter of Eiko who operates a restaurant, and through her he obtains a lodging in the house of Shiu, a dancing mistress. The students enjoy their life, but most have their troubles. Sakamoto works as a laborer on the docks to help pay for his schooling, and Akiko worries over the relationship between her mother and Sakurai, a corrupt politician, suspected to be involved in graft over jet aircraft.

小室は大型貨物船の船医だが、船を降りることにした。やっと小さな医院を建てるほどの金がたまったのだ。コックの坊やのねがいで、彼は皿をクレイがわりに早撃ちの手なみを見納めさせてやった。帰京前に立寄った伊豆の猟場で、思わぬ殺人事件にまきこまれた。附近の開業医が散弾で顔も判らぬほど惨殺された。東京から駆けつけた子の雅夫と圭子は小室を犯人と目した。鉄道架設工事に盲腸患者が出た。図師刑事のすすめで、小室が行った。病人は常盤組の配下で働く湯沢組の組長だが、その弟俊二は彼に敵意を持っているようだった。帰途、置き去られたジープと死体を見た。工事場の給料輸送車で、金はなかった。死体は指輪から常盤組の頭の一人、親友の手納と知れた。彼はかつて湯沢組の幹部だった。妻のデザイナー悠子が駆けつけた。それは昔、小室が恋を清算しようと船医になった相手だった。小室は雅夫たちと東京へ帰った。二人は仲よくなっていた。雅夫の父の死は殺人の現場を目撃したかららしいと図師刑事が報告してきた。悠子に頼まれ、会うと、手納がいた。襲った相手を身代りにしたのだ。彼らが集団で湯沢組を裏切り、その入札額を常盤組に内報して落札させた。その復讐として俊二が殺人を行っていると判った。手納は新潟の姉をたよって逃げた。が、俊二が追ってきていた。油田地帯の中で手納は殺された。「現場が危い」と駈けつけた小室に言い残した。小室のセスナが落成祝賀会の工事現場に着いた時、完成したばかりのトンネルが爆破された。小室は祝賀会場へ向って燃えていく導火線を見た。猟銃に手をかけた。背中にピストルがあてられ、俊二の声が響く。射ったら、お前の命を貰うぜ。その時、小室は“男が命を賭ける時”を感じたという。導火線を切断したが、同時に射たれ川へ落ちた。が、俊二が爆薬庫を狙う直前、小室ははい上るのだ。死闘。そして、ノサれるのはむろん俊二だ。--事件は解決し小室は船へ舞いもどった。医院設立費を費いはたしたから。彼を一番よろこんで迎えたのは、コックの坊やだ。また、早射ちが見られるから。
Toshio Ishimatsu
Seven years ago, Ishimatsu Toshio, a talented radio producer at Zen Nihon Hōsō, witnessed a crazed drug addict murder his wife and then commit suicide, though Toshio was able to save the lives of their two children. Just transferred from Shimizu to Tokyo, Toshio hopes to produce a program that will expose the drug trade in Tokyo. One day, Toshio stops into a noodle shop where he is mistaken for a drug dealer and passed a bagful of drugs. The real dealer arrives in time to follow Toshio home. That night Toshio is attacked by the dealer, who turns out to be Kenji, one of the children Toshio had saved. Kenji can't bring himself to kill Toshio, so he runs away and goes into hiding from the mafia. While continuing to investigate the drug trade, Toshio searches for Kenji to get Kenji's testimony for his program.

Shuntaro Fuma
Eikichi Yamashiro, who is a former contender for the boxing title, works as a manager at a Club Champion owned by his fiancé Natsuko’s father. He lost a title match five years ago as he was besotted by Natsuko, but Eikichi actually cannot give up the dream of the championship. One day, he meets Shuntaro Fuma, who is a punk kid but a promising boxer, and realizes the dream that he himself could never fulfill. Then, they together start to train with the aim of the title. Haruo Nanjô
Kawai Midori's father left the family a long time ago and since her mother passed away, she has taken care of her younger siblings by herself by working with a group of itinerant camellia oil peddlers. While she is In Izu selling camellia oil, she meets a young student, Katō Yutaka, who asks her to let him take her picture. The peddlers also meet a jazz band, and when Midori sings a song, teased by the band's star singer Nanjō Haruo, the band members are enraptured by her beautiful voice. She eventually joins the band and quickly becomes a popular jazz singer.
Daisuke Yamano
It’s been five years since her husband had passed away. Fuyuko lives in the quiet suburbs, in a small but loving home with her three beautiful daughters. Haruko, the eldest, is the lead vocalist in a band. Natsuko is the conscientious type, who spends her days in ballet classes beautifying herself. The youngest of the three, Akiko is a bookworm who found her niche in philosophy. Although the sisters may appear to have nothing in common, there is one thing they all agree on; "Mom needs a new husband".
"Diamond" Fuyu
A conflict between two yakuza families in Tokyo, the Izus and the Yoshidas, has recently broken out. When an Izu underling starts a fight with a Yoshida man, Fuyu, the Izu family sends Tsuruta, a senior member of the clan, to make a personal apology to Fuyu. Tsuruta discovers that the woman he is in love with is Fuyu's sister, Tatsuko. Tsuruta ends up gambling with a swindler, who is in fact Tatsuko's husband. (The general plot of the film was re-used for Seijun Suzuki's Kanto Wanderer).

The film tells the story of a group of high school boxing team members who spend their days drinking, sailing and chasing girls, and who more often than not spend their nights getting into brawls. In particular, it focuses upon Tatsuya, a sullen young man, who falls in love with Eiko, a proud upper-class girl.
