大正時代、村の旧家「田治見家」の当主・要蔵が発狂し、村人32人を惨殺するという事件が起こる。要蔵は、落武者たちを皆殺しにした際の首謀者・田治見庄左衛門の子孫でもあった。そして20数年後の昭和23年、またもやこの村で謎の連続殺人事件が発生することとなる。物語は、神戸に住む寺田辰也の身辺をかぎ回る不審人物の出現から始まる。彼は母1人子1人で、戦争から戻ってくると天涯孤独の身となっていた。そして復員後2年近く過ぎたある日、彼の行方をラジオで捜していた老人と、諏訪弁護士の仲介で面会する。ところが、2人きりになったとたん、老人は血を吐いて死ぬ。
