Gilles Margaritis

The itinerant musician Lampluche, having found a musical score on the banks of a river and a full wallet, was taken to the neighboring town for the famous composer Maxence Leroy. The inhabitants of the small town only dream of music, so Lampluche is very well received. But Maxence Leroy arrives in the city.

A slapstick comedy centered on two neighboring republics, Crogandia and Miremia, and the various disasters that befall the ceremonial unveiling of a statue, the launching of a ship, and the crash-landing of a Miremian pilot in Crogandian territory.

９０年にほぼ原型に近い形に修復された版（従って本篇の前に、そのいきさつの解説が若干つく）の公開によって、日本でもようやく一般に見られるようになったＪ・ヴィゴの傑作である。アタラント号とは、ル・アヴールとその上流の田舎町を往復している艀。その若き船長の新妻が都会の誘惑にかられ、パリに近づいた折りにこっそり抜け出すが、怒った夫は彼女を置いて出航する。しかし、愛妻なしの彼はまるで腑抜けで、急に川に飛び込み、彼女の幻影を見たりしている。一方、妻はひったくりにあい、帰るに帰れず、同船している老水夫ジュール親爺（Ｍ・シモン）により、ようやく探し出される。話は俗なものだが、詩的で自由奔放な表現、キャラクターが際立つ肉体性の把握、溢れるユーモア……映画の官能が蒸気となって観客を包み込んでしまう、これは聖なる映画と言えるかも知れない。何度観てもはぐらかされ、不安なときめきを覚える。幼い子供と遊ぶのに似た、つき詰めようのない快楽を帯びた映画。Ｍ・シモンの醜い外見に惑わされてはいけない。彼こそが天使だ。
