1944年8月、独ソ戦のさなかのポーランド東部戦線。ソ連赤軍は、ワルシャワへとつながる戦略上極めて重要な拠点となる橋を敵軍から死守せよと、若きエゴロフ中尉率いる第一砲兵隊に命令。早速その橋へと向かった一隊は、すぐ近くの修道院に、聴覚に障害があって身寄りのない子どもたちが、心優しい修道女エヴァの手でかくまわれていることを知る。橋に加え、子どもたちも守ろうと、彼らは必死の奮闘を繰り広げる。
