フレッド・アステア、シド・チャリシー主演のミュージカル映画。かつてダンス映画で名声を得た俳優トニー。その彼も今や俳優生命に陰りが見え始めていた。そんな時、旧友のマートン夫妻が、彼のために書き下ろしたミュージカル・コメディ「バンド・ワゴン」の舞台化案を持ち掛けてくる。トニーは初め戸惑うも、その企画へ参加することに。さらにそこへ、ジェフリーという男も協力者としてやって来る。彼は作品の近代的な音楽劇化を提案。その突飛な発想で、トニーの共演者に新進バレリーナのガブリエルを抜擢した。こうして彼らは、ジェフリーのアイデアに不安を抱きながら初演を迎える。
