症状がレベル5まで進行した感染者は、凶暴化して人間を襲い始めるという危険なウイルスが蔓延するアメリカ。ある秘密と目的を抱えながら、CDC（疾病管理予防センター）のドクターとして、感染者から未感染者を守る救助チームへの配属を希望した女性ローレン。彼女の狙いは、本来感染者は救助不能とされるところ、ドクターなど貴重な人材の場合に限り、レベル1までなら治療できる特効薬を使えるという特権にあった。
