軍部が実権を握る戦前の日本。ある山奥の村で、特高警察の警官が殺された。特高警察部隊長の甘粕は村に捜査本部を設置、拷問同然の横暴な捜査を繰り返す。特高に対する村人の怒りが日に日に高まる中、血の病で入院する姉の蘭を献身的に看病する心優しい青年・蓮は、日本刀を手にしたよそ者の少女・小夜に出会う。“古きもの”を狩るため村へ来たという小夜を奇妙に思いながらも、泊まる場所もない彼女を家に招く蓮だった。

昔、日本のある島に鬼の兄弟が居て、人々に襲い掛かった。人間達は立ち向かったが、負けてばかりだった。鬼達には、「オニの切り札」と呼ばれる不思議な石があったからだった。ある所、村の娘が「オニの切り札」を二つに分けて、鬼達を見事に退治したのだった。 そして月日が流れ、1980年代のとある時代の田舎にユウという東京から来た少年がいた。母を失って東京から田舎に住む祖母の元へ来たが、田舎の暮らしに馴染めず、同世代のクライメイトに馬鹿にされていじめを受けていた。 いつか東京に帰りたいと願っていた彼は不気味な連中に襲われていた所を、イマジンのデネブと「時の列車」デンライナーに乗る野上良太郎とその仲間達に助けてもらう。彼等の話によれば、自分を襲った連中は、大昔に退治される筈のオニの一族で、大地震の影響で、過去と未来が繋がり、鬼達はそれを利用して、「自分達が退治されない歴史」と変えようとしていた。その影響でデネブの契約者・桜井侑斗は消滅し、良太郎と契約しているイマジン達もはぐれてしまったという。さらに母から貰ったお守りが鬼達が探す「オニの切り札」の片方をだとわかったユウは、自分も鬼退治に行くと言って、デンライナーに乗る。

Kakeru, a former elite runner at high school, is chased for stealing food. He is saved by a Kansei University student Haiji, who is also a runner. Haiji persuades Kakeru to live in the old dormitory "Chikusei-so" where he plans to team up with fellow residents to enter the Hakone Ekiden relay marathon, one of the most prominent university races in Japan. Kakeru soon finds out that all of the residents except for Haiji and himself are complete novices.

On June 2, 2008, Toei announced on its various official websites that there would be a series of short five-minute internet movies that are spin-offs of Kamen Rider Kiva: King of the Demonic Castle. The featurettes are called Kamen Rider Backwards-Kiva: Queen of the Demonic Castle. In these shorts, Otoya and Yuri are brought into the present by Castle Doran when the mysterious Queen of the Legendorga is about to be revived. The shorts themselves are all zany misadventures of everyone in the Kiva cast.
