ドワーフの王国を取り戻すべく旅をしていたホビット族のビルボ・バギンズやドワーフのトーリンらは、竜のスマウグからついに王国を奪い返す。しかし、スマウグは人々を襲い、その一方でトーリンが財宝を独り占めしようとし、ビルボがそれを止めようと危険な選択をしてしまう。そんな中、宿敵サウロンが奇襲を仕掛け、ドワーフとエルフと人間の間では対立が深まる。
