内気な女子高生のミアは、父グラントの再婚でできた義理の姉サーシャとも打ち解けられず孤独な日々を送っていた。マヤ文明の遺跡を研究する考古学者のグラントはそんなミアを心配し、船中からサメを鑑賞する観光ツアーに姉妹を誘う。ところがそこへサーシャの親友アレクサとニコールが合流し、姉妹をマヤ文明の遺跡が眠る海底でのスリリングな洞窟ダイビングに連れ出す。それは高度な技術と装備が求められる上級者向けのアクティビティだったが、ダイビング初心者の４人は安易な探検気分で洞窟を目指す。そして海底洞窟の入り口で、マヤ文明の遺跡を目の当たりにして興奮するミアたちだったが…。

遺伝子操作の研究に取り組んでいるシンセクト社のある施設で、そこで育った若い女性モーガンが施設のスタッフに大けがを負わせる異常事態が起きる。同社の危機管理コンサルタントのリーは急いで施設に乗り込むが、人工生命体“Lシリーズ”の一体であるモーガンは、数年間で赤ん坊から大人に成長するうち、施設のスタッフからまるで娘のように愛される存在になっていたことを知る。遅れて原因追究を目指す科学者も到着する。
