1941年、ナチスドイツによるソ連侵攻が始まった。まだ大学生だったリュドミラは、非凡な射撃の才能を買われ、戦場に身を投じる。狙撃兵として次々と標的を仕留めるリュドミラは、やがて敵からは“死の女”と恐れられ、軍上層部には英雄として讃えられ、戦意高揚の道具として利用されてゆく。戦場で芽生えた恋、愛する人の死、そして新たな出逢い。その間も戦況は悪化し、10カ月におよぶ壮絶な攻防戦が開始された。
